The role of the correlator is to reproduce the signals recorded at the VLBI stations involved in the observation, and to combine them in two-station baseline pairs, to yield the visibility function which is the fundamental measurement produced by the VLB interferometer.

A conventional radio interferometer consists of two or more radio telescopes, connected via wire or radio link to an unique larger antenna system. Baselines are the distances between the telescopes.
