Dr. Wilhelm J. Altenhoff
(1933 - 2017)

August 28, 2017

Our former colleague Dr Wilhelm J. Altenhoff passed away on 2 August 2017 at age 83 after a prolonged illness.

Wilhelm Altenhoff was a widely known German radio astronomer. He earned his doctoral degree at the University of Münster with Prof. Hans Strassl, and he worked then at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in the USA. From there he came to Bonn to the newly founded Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie. As a senior scientist he worked with Prof. Peter Mezger and then with Prof. Karl Menten until his retirement in 1998. He continued his close involvement with the institute as a guest researcher until last year and pursued his life-long passion - radio astronomical research on comets, planets and stars.

Wilhelm Altenhoff was a highly respected colleague and a friend to many of us. He made exceptional contributions to the Institute and to the field of radio astronomy especially in Germany. We will preserve his memory with thanks and respect.

For the Directors and all colleagues at the MPIfR.
