Partial Solar Eclipse on August 12

Three astronomical institutions in Bonn are inviting the public to join them in observing the sun.

The partial solar eclipse on August 12 will be best viewed in Bonn from the Meßdorfer Feld. Come to the Argelander Institute for Astronomy, located right next door, to watch the event through telescopes and with solar eclipse glasses—weather permitting! At the same time, a livestream will be shown in the lecture hall, so you can experience the celestial spectacle regardless of the weather. Young astronomy fans will have a great time in the kids’ corner.

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, the Argelander Institute for Astronomy, and experienced members of the Bonner Volkssternwarte will be happy to answer all your questions about the solar eclipse and astronomy in general.

The eclipse begins at 7:19 p.m., when the Sun is already very low in the west. The maximum of the eclipse, during which 88 percent of the Sun will be obscured, will be reached at 8:13 p.m. Even in the hours leading up to the eclipse, it’s worth taking a look at the Sun, where interesting details become visible with the help of various telescopes.

The event is free of charge. Registration is not required.
