Minerva Research Group on Cosmic Magnetism

The Minerva Research Group on Cosmic Magnetism is led by Dr. Sui Ann Mao, with group members: Postdoctoral fellow Dr. Aritra Basu, PhD candidates Maja Kierdorf and Yik Ki (Jackie) Ma.
The Minerva Research Group aims to use broadband radio polarimetry to provide unique insight into cosmic magnetic fields. Even though electromagnetism is one of the four fundamental forces of nature, little is known about how large-scale magnetic fields are generated in galaxies. Sensitive broadband radio synchrotron polarization observations of emission from the galaxies themselves and Faraday Rotation Measure of background radio sources behind them (the so-called RM grid) provide us with the best chance to understand the processes that generate galactic-scale magnetic fields.
Specifically, we are working on:
  • Understanding the broadband polarization properties of the background sources used in RM grid experiments
  • Modeling and analysis of broadband polarization observations of nearby Galactic objects and of local volume normal and interacting galaxies
  • Developing tools and techniques needed to detect galactic-scale magnetic fields at cosmological distances
