LOFAR

Invitation: Workshop on German LOFAR Key Science Projects
Bonn, Thursday, March 9, 2006.
_____________________________________________

This workshop is to discuss and define Key Science Projects for the German participation at LOFAR. The criteria for such projects are:
- Key Science Projects have the power to answer major questions in astrophysics or particle physics
- Long-wavelength radio astronomy is the best spectral range to answer these questions
- Scientists in German institutions have special interests and expertise in these fields.
The German Key Science Projects are independent of the Key Science Projects already defined by the International LOFAR project. In case of overlap, cooperation is envisaged.
The workshop will start with an overview of the International Key Science Projects and a limited number of short contributions (10 min each) on ideas for German Key Science Projects.
If you wish to give a contribution, please send an abstract (of not more than 1 page) to rbeck@mpifr-bonn.mpg.de.
The workshop will be held at the MPIfR, Auf dem Huegel 69, 53121 Bonn-Endenich, on

Thursday March 9, 11-17h.

MPG FUNDING FOR A LOFAR STATION AT EFFELSBERG

The Max Planck Gesellschaft will fund a LOFAR station next to the 100m Effelsberg telescope. This station will be delivered by ASTRON (Dwingeloo/Netherlands) and operated by the Max Planck Institut fuer Radioastronomie. The low-frequency part (30-80 MHz) with 96 low-band antennas will be installed in 2006, the high-frequency part (110-240 MHz) with 96 high-band antennas will follow in 2007. The Effelsberg station will be the first international LOFAR station.
