Abstract
We discuss observational evidence for sequential and triggered star
formation in galactic and extragalactic OB associations. We will first
review in detail the star formation process in the Scorpius-Centaurus
OB association, the nearest OB association to the Sun, where several
recent extensive studies have provided comprehensive information on the
stellar content and the ages of the different OB subgroups. These data
have allowed us to reconstruct the star formation history of the
association in some detail and provided important insight into the
activity in the rho Oph and Lupus dark clouds, and with the origin of
several young stellar groups in the southern sky. After discussing
evidence for triggered star formation in and around various other
Galactic OB associations (e.g. Ori OB1, Per OB2) we will compare the
observational results with recent models of rapid star formation in the
turbulent interstellar medium (cf. Briceno et al. chapter in Protostars
and Planets V, in press).
