A mini Observing Guide
A mini Observing Guide (old version!)

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES

BEFORE OBSERVING
Calibration Sources - Catalogues of pointing and flux density calibrators are available in the control room
Software to help the planning of observations:
ASTRO (part of the GILDAS package)
COCO Object location and coordinate converter (HEASARC site)
Integration time Calculator(under construction)

TRAVEL AND ACCOMODATION
There are two double, six single rooms, as well as a room for disabled persons available. The charge is 9 € per night (more details). Observers can also reserve rooms at MPIfR in Bonn.

There is a fully equiped kitchen and dinning area at the observers' disposal. Some ready-made meals and snacks can be bought from the telescope operator. It is strongly advised that adequate supplies of food be purchased before going to the telescope since shopping possibilities there are absolutely minimal.

DURING THE OBSERVATIONS
User Interface / Manuals
Two UNIX workstations can be used for offline analysis. Their names are astrobone1 (a Linux PC) and chef (a SUN workstation).  Usernames and passwords will be provided by the local staff.

Observers who perform their analysis on these computers are urged to backup their processed data (and clean their subdirectory) before leaving the observatory. No backups of  visitors'  processed data are guaranteed. Observers are also welcome to bring up their laptop - a DHCP server is running. However they are asked to have an up-to-date virus scanner installed on their computer.

Offline Analysis Software
A variety of analysis software is available, depending on the observing mode used:
Continuum - A guide for the "Toolbox" software package is available in the Control room

Spectral Lines - CLASS is part of the GILDAS software package designed for analysis of spectral line data.
A PDF version of the user manual can be found here
A short guide on how to examine spectral line data from the AK90 and the FFTS with CLASS while you are at the telescope.

AFTER THE OBSERVATIONS

Data will be written to a CD-ROM by the MPIfR staff
